British admiral (1724-1816) who fought in the Revolutionary War and later served as Mediterranean Commander-in-Chief in the early years of the French Revolution. ALS signed “Hood,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, July 17, [1790, per docketing on the reverse]. Handwritten letter to politician Evan Nepean, in part: "Your Letter respecting Thomas Hall is perfectly satisfactory to me, but I was lead to believe that the Lords Justices were very willing he should receive a further mark at the Royal mercy. I trouble you with a Letter I have received from Lemon Berber, and I have been told he is an excellent seaman, what his crime was for which he is now on board the Censor Hulk I do not know or whether he has a chance for a Pardon." In fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved portrait.
