Union officer (1823-1876) who served in a number of important administrative positions during the Civil War. Civil War-dated LS signed “Jas. A. Hardie,” one page, 8 x 9.75, August 1 [1862 or 1863]. Addressed from the Adjutant General's Office in Washington, a letter to Major General John Sedgwick, in full: "What officers of the corps staff did Gen'l Franklin take with him when relieved of you?" In fine condition. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
During the Peninsula, Maryland, and Fredericksburg campaigns of the Civil War, Hardie was acting adjutant general of the Army of the Potomac, and on November 29, 1862, was appointed brigadier general of volunteers, but it was not confirmed by the United States Senate and the promotion was revoked on January 22, 1863. In 1863 he was appointed assistant adjutant general with the rank of major on the staff of the regular army, and on May 24, 1864, was made inspector general with the rank of colonel.
