ALS in German, signed “Freud,” one page, 6 x 8.75, personal letterhead, June 8, 1924. Fantastic handwritten letter about the translation of two of his most important works: The Interpretation of Dreams and Totem and Taboo. In full: "Very esteemed Professor: I have received your telegram, am naturally ready to authorize without hesitation the translation of The Interpretation of Dreams that you will publish, and have advised the publisher, Deuticke, to break off the negotiations with the other side, also informing him of your promise of compensation. I have not yet received the translation of Totem and Taboo that you have brought out." In fine condition.
The Interpretation of Dreams was first published in a German edition [Die Traumdeutung] of only 600 copies, which took eight years to sell out. As Freud's methods and influence grew more widely recognized, the work gained in popularity and seven more editions were printed in his lifetime. The first English version, translated by Abraham Brill, was released in 1913. Widely regarded as one of Freud's most significant works, its wide-ranging influence has been felt in the sciences, art, and literature over the course of the past century.
