British naturalist, explorer, and biologist (1823-1913) best known for proposing a theory of natural selection which prompted Charles Darwin to publish his own. ALS signed “Alfred R. Wallace,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, October 25, 1905. Handwritten letter to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, in full: "I did not get on at all with the Cape Heaths! They all died in the first of those 5 hard winters we had—1891-5. I have now got a better garden & a nice view, here, where I have built a house and am, as usual, amusing myself raising plants from seed whenever I can get them—trying them out of doors or in a small greenhouse with varying success. Should you ever be in the neighbourhood (half way between Poole and Winbourne) please give me a call." In fine condition.
