American jurist and politician (1785-1861) who served in Congress, as postmaster general, and as an associate justice of the Supreme Court. ALS, one page, 7.75 x 4.75, November 23, 1853. Addressed from Cincinnati, a handwritten draft letter praising Ohio judge Thomas Scott, in full: "Judge Scott was on the Supreme Bench of Ohio when I was admitted to the bar in 1808. There was no man on the bench associated with him who stood higher in the estimation of the profession or of the public. At the bar, after he left the bench, for many years he practiced law, and he stood among the eminent men of the profession—as a land lawyer, he was at the head of the bar." In fine condition.
