(Walt Disney Studios, 1985) Extremely large original concept painting for The Black Cauldron, a dark fantasy adventure film inspired by Welsh mythology. The detailed painting shows the catacombs underneath the Horned King's castle, complete with a gargoyle and threatening black vines in the foreground; the winding staircase glows beneath an archway in the distance. Accomplished in gouache and watercolor on 30 x 20 art board; image area measures 28 x 18. In fine condition, with some wear to corners. The Black Cauldron pioneered new ground for Disney: it was the studio's first animated film to receive a PG rating as well as the first Disney animated film to feature computer-generated imagery.
