United States Army general (1898-1975) who commanded the force defending Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, most famous for his brief reply to a German surrender ultimatum: 'Nuts.' TLS signed “A. C. McAuliffe,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Joint Task Force One letterhead, July 11, 1946. Letter to Ashley T. Cole, in part: "Your request that I inscribe a few lines and my signature in your copy of 'Report After Action' was forwarded and reached me yesterday. As you see, I am busily engaged in the tests of the atomic bomb. The second test is tentatively scheduled for July 25th, so I hope to be back in Washington during the first week of August." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing to the right side, and toning from prior display.
