Description

British Army officer and colonial administrator (c. 1684-1760) who served as commander of the 40th Regiment of Foot and governor of Nova Scotia from 1740 to 1749, remembered for leading the colony through King George's War and repulsing two French attempts to capture Annapolis Royal in 1744 and 1745. Rare ALS signed twice, “Mascarene,” one page, 5.5 x 7.5, November 29, 1729. Mascarene writes two letters from "Annapolis Royall" on a single sheet, both to Mr. William Adair in London concerning a financial matter. In part: "Thirty days after sight of this my first Bill of Exchange my second, third, nor fourth of the same tenour and date not paid, Please to pay unto Mr. John Caswall Merch't in London or to his order the summ of thirty four [pounds ten shilling sterling and place the said summ to acc't of my subsistence as Captain in the Honourable Collonel Richard Philipps Regim't of Foot." In fine condition.
