American politician (1769-1828) who served as senator and who, as governor of New York, played a major role in the construction of the Erie Canal. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.5 x 10, June 3, 1820. As governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton appoints Abel Spalding as "Lieutenant in Lieut. Col. Archa Campbell's Battalion in our County of Steuben." Boldly signed at the conclusion by Governor Clinton and countersigned by Secretary John Van Ness Yates. In fine condition, with light toning along the folds.
