Description

The great abolitionist aims to effect change in the "United States where three millions of our fellow creatures are held in slavery"

English abolitionist (1760-1846) who was a leading campaigner against the slave trade in the British Empire. ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7.25, June 20, 1845. Handwritten letter to an "old friend and fellow labourer," in part: "I am now in the 86th year of my age, having served the sacred cause nearly 61 years…My correspondence has been principally with the inhabitants of the United States where three millions of our fellow creatures are held in slavery and I rejoice to be informed from that quarter of the world, that my different publications there have produced a considerable effect, having brought over hundreds to our cause." He goes on to refer to erroneous charges brought against him by Wilberforce and discuss missionary activities in Africa. In fine condition.
