Rare payment made to a black soldier "who hath served in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army" at Valley Forge

Partly-printed DS, signed “J. Lawrence,” one page, 8 x 3.75, June 1, 1782. State of Connecticut Treasury Office pay order for £13.2 payable to "Robert Freeman, who hath served in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army," signed at the conclusion in ink by Treasurer John Lawrence. The reverse records several interest payments made, and is endorsed by Freeman with his mark, "X," near the cancelation hole. The Valley Forge Muster Role Project records a "Robert Freeman," a private of African American ethnicity, as part of the 8th Connecticut Regiment on duty under General Washington at Valley Forge from December 1777 through June 1778. In very good to fine condition, with some splitting along the fragile folds.
