Manuscript DS, signed “Oliv. Wolcott Jr. Comptr.,” one page, 8 x 6.25, May 11, 1787. Pay order to Treasurer John Lawrence, in part: "Pay Jonathan Smith Esq'r of New Haven County Eight Pounds Lawful Money…for attending the Election in May 1787." Signed at the conclusion by Benjamin Huntington and Andrew Adams, and endorsed on the reverse by Jonathan Fitch and Oliver Wolcott, Jr. In fine condition, with a round cancellation hole affecting some text.
Wolcott (1760-1833) would go on to serve as second United States Secretary of the Treasury, a judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit, and the 24th Governor of Connecticut. Huntington (1736-1800) served as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress and as a member of the House of Representatives during the First United States Congress. Adams (1736-1797) was a delegate for Connecticut to the Continental Congress, signatory of the Articles of Confederation, and later Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.
