Description

Rear admiral in the United States Navy and a pioneering oceanographer and hydrographer (1845-1923) who is best remembered as the captain of USS Maine, which exploded in Havana harbor, Cuba, in 1898. The explosion set off the events that led up to the start of the Spanish-American War. TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, U. S. Navy Yard letterhead, November 11, 1903. Letter to James S. McCartney of the International League of Press Clubs, in part: "I have very little faith in my literary ability and doubt that I could give you an article that would add much to the value of your magazine. Nevertheless I should be very glad to try it were it not that I am immensely behind at the present time in my official and private work with the pen. If I should promise I should probably not be able to fulfil my promise, because promises made two or three months ago are yet in the air." In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and light toning.
