Description

Admiral in the US Navy (1858-1936) who helped to modernize the American fleet, and commanded all US naval forces operating in Europe during World War I. TLS signed “Wm. S. Sims,” two pages, 8 x 10, United States Embassy letterhead, July 17, 1899. Letter to the editor of the North American Review, in part: "I hope you will pardon an apparent interference in your affairs, but Senor Jose Muller y Tejeiro, a Lieutenant in the Spanish Navy, has written to me requesting me to endeavor to obtain information concerning a document on Hobson's exploits, which he tells me was sent to you by registered mail by Carlos Roland about two months ago. Senor Muller does not write to me in my official capacity, but as a friend, as we have had a long correspondence together concerning certain publications of his on the Spanish-American war, particularly the operations around Santiago; and as he has no acquaintances in the United States he naturally turns to me to help him out of his present difficulties. He tells me he has received no acknowledgment of his article on Hobson, or any reply to a letter from Mr. Carlos Roland written some time subsequent to the sending of the document. If therefore you can give this matter your attention I will consider it a personal favor." In fine condition, with a small mounting remnant to the top of the first page.
