American historian and educator (1789-1866) who served as president of Harvard from 1849 to 1853. Autograph manuscript signed, one page, 5.5 x 8.75, October 7, 1865. Handwritten statement on George Washington, in full: "If Washington had any one quality of mind & heart more strong than another, it was the love of his country. His pure & ardent patriotism was invested with the sacred obligation of a duty, and from the sacred discharge of this duty he never swerved in thought, word, or deed." In fine condition.
