Description

Scottish Royal Navy officer and polar explorer (1777-1856) who led three Arctic expeditions—the last, in 1850, being a fruitless search for the lost expedition party of Sir John Franklin. ALS signed “John Ross,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.5 x 9, October 18, 1825. Handwritten letter from "On board the Planet," in part: "It appearing likely that adverse winds will oblige us to put in to Portsmouth I am anxious to address a few observations to you upon the subject of one last interview in the Downs. Perfectly astounded by the tone & terms in which you commenced the communication, & my consciousness assuring me that I had at least so far as honest & zealous interviews could go, deserved no harshness from the Directors. I was far less collected & self-possessed than I could wish." He goes on to explain a misunderstanding over a financial matter at great length. In fine condition, with a small caption affixed to the top, trimmed edges, and light soiling.
