British naval administrator and explorer (1764-1848) who mapped the interior of South Africa and promoted the exploration of the Arctic; the Barrow Strait in northern Canada was named in his honor. ALS signed "J. Barrow," one page, 4.25 x 7, no date. Handwritten letter expressing a fellow explorer's "intention to explore a part of Australia which has hitherto never been approached," and soliciting support "to patronize the attempt which is a bold, and, if successful, one that may lead to important results." He adds: "At all events geography and physical science are interested in the search." In fine condition.
