Description

Mamie requests an absentee NYC ballot while residing at "The White House, Wash. D.C."

DS, one page, 7.25 x 15.5, October 10, 1953. Eisenhower's "Affidavit and Application to the Board of Elections for Absentee Voters' Ballots," filled out in her hand with her residence as “The White House, Wash. D.C.,” and the circumstances for her absence as “because my husband is in Federal Service." She also prints her name in capital letters, and signs in cursive at the conclusion. In fine condition, with multiple horizontal folds. Absentee ballots were not always controversial, but were a part of the basic framework of elections since the late 19th century. Given her busy schedule, The First Lady prepares in advance to vote—certainly in the 1953 New York Mayoral race. From the family of James Siket, Executive Director of the New York City Board of Elections at the time.
