Description

Sought-after 'blimp-free' Led Zeppelin poster for their 1969 California Irvine show

Scarce original color 12 x 19 poster for a Led Zeppelin concert at the University of California Irvine’s Crawford Hall on May 1, 1969. Designed by Chris Boulton, the psychedelic poster depicts the band with capillary wave-like patterns rippling out from each of their foreheads, making for a terrifically kaleidoscopic effect. Stylized text to upper portion reads, “Led Zeppelin, Lee Michaels, Thursday May 1, 8:00 P. M., U. C. Irvine, Crawford Hall,” with the lower border featuring ticket information. The upper border is stamped: “The Groove Co.” Professionally backed and expertly restored to fine condition. The consignor notes that this poster was obtained after the show.

This bright and highly displayable concert poster was the band's last to not include the appearance of a dirigible, the first showing of which occurred the next night in a poster for their show in Pasadena; the Zeppelin blimp then became a staple in nearly all future promotional materials.

The Crawford Hall in the words of manager Peter Grant: 'It was a great night when they appeared at the University of California. They did five encores that night and although the hall was filled to capacity with over 3,000 people in the audience, there were over 700 people outside who couldn’t get in. Fights broke out outside because people couldn’t get tickets and when Jimmy heard about it he asked everyone to squeeze up, had the side doors opened and managed to squeeze the waiting people in the hall.'
