Description

"To be able to speak & write our native tongue correctly is the most important branch of education"

ALS, one page both sides, 6.75 x 8.25, September 25, 1862. Handwritten letter to his niece, Maria B. Weaver, concerning her schooling for which he was paying the bill. In part: "As the time is approaching when you will become an inmate of Fair Hill Boarding School I enclose a letter to Mr. Kirk with a check on the Chemical Bank of New York for $50. By the terms I perceive that I need only pay in advance $43.34, but you may want some little things in the beginning. Whilst I desire you to be economical, I do not wish to deprive you of any of the books, necessaries or comforts which other girls may enjoy at the school." He goes on to correct some of her spelling mistakes from previous letters: "I am happy to perceive that every word in your late letter is correctly spelled. In your previous letter you wrote 'Presbyterean' for Presbyterian, 'Babtist' for Baptist, 'seperated' for separated & 'Twelth' for twelfth, leaving out the f. I am sorry to learn that Jessie's English has been neglected. To be able to speak & write our native tongue correctly is the most important branch of education. This, you will, no doubt speedily accomplish. Indeed, from your limited opportunities, I am agreeably surprised that you write so well. Be a good & industrious girl." In fine condition, with a small stain in the left margin.
