American statesman (1764-1836) who helped draft the Louisiana Civil Code and served as Andrew Jackson's secretary of state. LS signed “Edw. Livingston, Presid't New York Acad'y of Arts,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, December 24, 1803. Letter to French Minister of the Treasury Francois Barbe-Marbois, in part: "The Academy of Arts in this City having unanimously elected you an honorary member, have directed me in giving you this information to express their hope that the same eminent love of the Arts which has distinguished your character in Europe will be exerted in favor of their progress in the New World." In fine condition. An interesting association piece, as Livingston's older brother, Robert R. Livingston, had negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with Barbe-Marbois earlier in 1803.
