American statesman (1764-1836) who helped draft the Louisiana Civil Code and served as Andrew Jackson's secretary of state. ALS signed “Edw. Livingston,” one page, 8 x 10, January 22, 1830. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, in part: "I have seen Greenleaf again this morning he says he can give no answer until he receives an answer to a letter he has written for further information, probably I think to Harrisburgh to try whether he can not find the warrants there. I will write to you as soon as I hear from him again. He talked to me of a covenant he had with Nicholson that all lands purchased in Penna & I believe elsewhere were to be one third for his use. I treated this of course very lightly." In fine condition, with staining to the upper left corner.
