King of Spain (born 1527) from 1556 until his death in 1598; his eventful reign included Spain's conquest of the Philippines (named for him), the establishment of a colony in Florida, and the historic defeat of the Spanish Armada by the British in 1588. Manuscript DS in Spanish, signed “Yo el Rey,” one page, 8.25 x 11.75, May 21, 1578. Untranslated document issued to a prince. Mounted and matted beside a color portrait to an overall size of 24 x 20. In very good to fine condition, with minor edge loss, and several edge tears, a couple of which are repaired with old tape.
