King of England and Ireland (1566-1625) under whom the 'Golden Age' of Elizabethan literature and drama continued, and who famously sponsored the translation of the Bible into English; as King James VI, he ruled Scotland from 1567 until his death. Manuscript DS, signed “James R,” one page, 7.75 x 12, November 21, 1590. As King James VI of Scotland, he writes to Lord Gray, ordering a payment of 500 marks to John Stewart, "that w[i]thout farder protracting of tyme or difficultie you mak thankfull pament to the said Johnne of the soresaid sowme." Mounted, matted, and framed beside an engraved portrait to an overall size of 22.5 x 20. In very good to fine condition, with a repaired area of paper loss in the left margin.
