Description

Longtime senator of Missouri (1782-1858) who was a strong advocate of westward expansion of the United States, remembered for fighting a duel with Andrew Jackson in 1812 before becoming a key supporter of his administration. Third-person ALS signed within the text, “Mr. Benton,” and vertically along the left edge, “Thomas H. Benton,” one page, 8 x 8.25, June 30, 1840. Written from the Senate Chamber, in full: “Mr. Benton has great pleasure in having an opportunity to show his respect for Mrs. Hale by complying with the small request which has been made by the Hon. W. Hubbard. This brief note will give her the autograph which she requests for her son, the name, as usually signed, being in the margin.” In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, and splitting along the central vertical fold, partly repaired with tape on the reverse.
