Multimillionaire businessman, socialite, and horse racing aficionado (1851-1924) best known for building New York's Belmont Park. ALS signed “August Belmont,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 6.75, no date. Letter to Mr. Sprague, in full: "Thank you for the Raspberries. They are truly the best variety I have ever eaten and I prize greatly the prospect of being able to grow some myself next year, thanks to your generosity. With the best crop of hay we ever had on Long Island, our poor short handed farmers are having a terrible struggle with St. Swithin, with the odds in favor of the Saint. But why keep on calling him a Saint?? Habits these days count for nothing any more. Please convey my best respects to Mrs. Sprague." Another hand has added a date of July 23, 1919 to the upper right. In fine condition.
