Description

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, State of New York Executive Chamber letterhead, December 20, 1929. Letter to the Hon. Arthur S. Tomkins, a justice of the New York Supreme Court, in part: "I am arranging the Appellate Division appointment to begin on the 13th of January. It makes me very happy to be able to designate you, for you richly merit this promotion after all of your many years of fine service to the State. I had a nice talk with Mr. Syme. Get him to tell you about the letter I received from our Anti-Saloon League friend Anderson. The letter has been filed without reply!" In very good to fine condition, with the text of the letter faded and very faint; the still-bold signature could be effectively matted by itself. Despite the faded text, the letter boasts especially interesting content considering its mention of the "Anti-Saloon League," the leading organization lobbying for prohibition in the United States. Four years later as president, FDR would end prohibition for good.
