Description

Montgomery of Alamein plans his gardens: "I think we should have something hardy and colourful"

ALS, one page, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, March 1, 1964. Letter to "Chadbund," apparently his gardener. In full: "I note that you will come shortly to begin the pruning. Last winter the Senecio Greyii took a bashing and 4 bushes did not recover during the summer and I suggest should be discarded. In their place I think we should have something hardy and colourful. The bushes of Taxus Bacata Semperaurea have done very well; they are a bright yellow colour and stand up well to frost. The Prime Minister is giving me some red willows, which should be here when you come. They have to be planted about 18 inches deep in a hole which is dug. I will discuss with you where they should be put—on the banks of the river and mill stream I would say. Let me know your opinion about the Taxus bushes. If you agree you could bring them with you—about 8 I would say." In fine condition.
