Description

Civil War-dated partly-printed muster roll, signed "David J. Caw, Capt. 77th N.Y.V.," one page both sides, 20.5 x 21, August 31, 1863. Document for the 77th New York Infantry Regiment, covering the period of its participation at the Battle of Gettysburg. The document is headed "Muster Roll of Captain David J. Caw's, Company (H), of the Seventy Seventh Regiment of New York State Vols, Inf, United States Army, Lieut Colonel W. B. French, from the Thirtieth day of June, 1863, when the last mustered, to the Thirty first day of August 1863." The muster roll lists the soldiers in the regiment, dates of service and payment, and remarks.

On the reverse, Caw pens an account of the regiment's movements before, during, and after the historic battle, in part: "Marched from Manchester Md, July 1/63 to Gettysburgh Pa, where we arrived July 2d, supported a battery, with balance of reg't, in the fight of July 3d, no casualties occurred—Co sent out to the front on a reconnaissance July 4th returned in the P.M. reported no enemy in sight. Moved from Gettysburgh, July 5th/63, saw indications of the enemy in the P.M. July 6th Reg't, with the brigade detached from the div & corps, for the purpose of annoying the flack movement, passed thru Fairfield, Pa. driving the enemy before us." In very good condition, with toning, splitting along a horizontal fold, and minor paper loss to the lower edge.
