Description

Union general (1825-1888) who fought at Bermuda Hundred and Drewry's Bluff. He was severely injured in his pursuit of Jubal Early in the Shenandoah Valley. Civil War-dated ALS signed “Q. A. Gillmore, Brig. Genl.,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 11.5, June 5, 1863. Letter to Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck, in part: "I ask authority to purchase two scows; five or six telescopic rifles, and four of David Smith's batteries of small rifles, comprising twenty-five rifle barrels arranged to be fired simultaneously. I am acquainted with this piece & it is now in service in the Dept: of the Gulf. It is strongly recommended by Col. Delafield & other good judges…I saw Admiral Foote yesterday. He does not expect to start south for fifteen or twenty days. Instructions should be obtained from the Navy Department, to Admiral Dupont, to cooperate…in any initiatory steps…to obtained lodgement at Morris Island before its defenses are completed…Admirals Foote & Dahlgren coincide with my views on this point." In fine condition, with trimmed edges; retain segments of another page from being inlaid into a larger sheet.
