Description

ANS signed “J. J. P.,” written in pencil at the top of a letter addressed to Pershing by New York Herald publisher James Gordon Bennett, Jr., one page, 5.25 x 8.25, September 28, 1917. Pershing's brief handwritten note, in full: "Col. Nolan. I should like to do this. Suggest some way please." The letter from Bennett, in full: "I have been notified that photographs of scenes at the American army camps in France are to be published only if received from Washington. Cannot an exception be made in favour of the Herald's European edition? Even granted that amateur photographing be forbidden, it should be possible for the Herald to obtain official photographs in Paris. To wait for their return from Washington would be a case of taking coals to Newcastle. Hoping you may see some way of relaxing the severity of this new rule in favour of the Herald, believe me, with kind regards." In fine condition.
