US Army officer (1828-1868) who participated in the Seminole Wars and Civil War, remembered as a hero for defending Fort Pickens from Confederate attack early on in the war. Crisp ink signature, "Yours Truly, A. J. Slemmer, 1st Lieut. 1st Arty, U.S. Army, Philadelphia, Pa., June 6th 1861,” on an off-white 6 x 8.75 album page, also signed by his wife, "Caroline Lane Slemmer, Philadelphia, June 6th 1861." A lengthy collector's notation below states, "These autographs were written as Lieut. and Mrs. Slemmer passed through Philadelphia immediately after their return from Fort Pickens," and recounts how Slemmer was forced to abandon Fort Barrancas, relocate to Fort Pickens, and there resist Confederate attack for three months until the arrival of Union relief. In fine condition.
