Description

The Birdman of Leavenworth prepares an avian delivery—"You will see something entirely new in birds"

TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, September 30, 1938. Written from Leavenworth Penitentiary, a letter to Fred E. Daw, in part: "I will send the birds of the 3th [sic], as I stated. I had not planned to send any birds of show quality in this shipment excepting the pinks and lavenders, but I will put in one pigmented bird, and there will probably be only one of the color-fed birds. I want to send you the best pink bird if I can, but she got on the stove and got her foot burnt without me knowing it. She lost the joint of one toe, and the blood spoiled a lot of her beautiful feathers. There are two others with fine feathers, but they are not as well colored as she is. I also have doubts about the lavender bird being good enough to send, but I will look him over tomorrow. All of the birds shipped with the exception of the pink will be males. If the pink bird shipped has one bad foot—I will still send her if the foot is well enough—you will know that you got the best; if the feet show no evidence of injury you will know that those I send later will have a much better color. In either case, you will see something entirely new in birds." Stroud makes several emendations in his own hand. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining.
