Colonial governor of Massachusetts who played a prominent role in Britain's struggle with France for control of North America (1694-1771). Manuscript DS, signed “W. Shirley,” one page, 6 x 7.25, June 25, 1745. Document for the "Province of the Massachusetts Bay," in part: "By his Excellency the Governor. Whereas John Hilton, Clement Christmas, Daniel Byles, Thomas Hawton & Robin Widger seamen lately belonging to the Snow Prince of Orange are now at Marblehead. These are to authorize & require Mr. John Boyles to go to Marblehead & to endeavour to [get] the said P. Seamen to come up to Boston…so they may enter into his Majesty's Service." In very good condition, with staining, mostly to the perimeter, and splitting to the horizontal fold.
