Description

William Seward

American statesman (1801-1872) who served as secretary of state in the Lincoln administration and who was severely injured in an attack that was part of the assassination conspiracy. His greatest political achievement was the purchase of Alaska from Russia, derided by contemporary skeptics as 'Seward's Folly.' Civil War-dated LS signed “William H. Seward,” one page, 8 x 10, November 12, 1862. Written from the Department of State, a letter to Judge Charles A. Peabody, in full: "I enclose a copy of a letter of yesterday addressed to me by the Secretary of War which you will regard as an official instruction. Your best discretion and closest reserve with reference to your business are desirable. General Banks is at the Astor House." In fine condition, with several horizontal folds.
