Description

Collection of three items signed by writers or illustrators, including Eugene Field (ALS), William Cullen Bryant (AQS), and George Cruikshank (ALS).

Eugene Field
American writer (1850-1895) best known for his poems of childhood, including ‘Wynken, Blynken, and Nod’ and ‘Little Boy Blue.’ ALS, one page, 5 x 8, November 5, 1894. Long letter in his tiny handwriting, in part: “I feel vastly flattered that the ladies of your Society should deem my work worthy of special consideration. The verses to which you refer are supposed to be the recital of an old man of little education but of much feeling. His recital begins in a light—almost familiar—vein, but becomes serious when Lincoln and the war are suggested.” In fine condition.

William Cullen Bryant
American romantic poet (1794-1878) remembered for the much-anthologized ‘Thanatopsis.’ AQS on an off-white 5 x 8 sheet, signed “William Cullen Bryant.” Bryant pens a quote from his poem ‘A Forest Hymn,’ in full: “The groves were God’s first temples.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

George Cruikshank
British caricaturist and illustrator (1792-1878) best known for his works satirizing contemporary politics and his illustrations for the works of Charles Dickens. ALS signed “Geo. Cruikshank,” one page, 4.5 x 7.25, December 9, 1860. Letter to Mr. Shatford, in full: “I saw my friend Dr. Wood yesterday, who advised me to see Sir Peter Laurie or his nephew—as I had the pleasure of knowing both these gentlemen. I went to the nephew. He will not be able to attend the Board tomorrow—but he knows about it and he says justice will be done—and that further interference is quite unnecessary—either by yours truly—or indeed any one else.” In very good condition, with old tape repair on reverse to a separated fold, and missing upper right corner tip.
