ALS signed “Charles Grey,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 9.25, December 28, 1792. In full: "In the Critical situation of this Country, & the Armament in consequence thereof; I think myself bound, by every tie of Duty & gratitude, to step forward in the offer of my service, on the present exigence. I request you will be pleased to lay this Letter, with all humility on my part, before his Majesty, & to assure him, that my mind is to deeply impressed by the repeated, & conspicuous testimonies he has been graciously pleased to Honor me with, not to Lay hold of every opportunity in my power, to mark the warmest, most dutiful, & affectionate attachment to his Person, together with the most persevering zeal & alacrity, in the execution of any Commands he may think me worthy of." Representing the first Earl Grey-signed item we have ever offered, this exceptional letter displays Grey's profound sense of patriotism at the age of sixty-three; he was appointed as commander of the West Indian expedition in the following year.
