Description

French politician (1729-1790) who was the country's first diplomatic representative to the United States. Revolutionary War-dated manuscript DS, in French, untranslated, signed “Gerard,” one page, 8 x 12.5, January 7, 1781. Signed as councilor of state, a document certifying the meritorious service of Captain Pierre Colomb during the American War of Independence, where he was taken prisoner in South Carolina by British forces and released with the provision that he no longer serve under the American flag. Original wax seal remains affixed to lower left. In fine condition.
