Description

Early oversized Spurr portrait of the master film-maker

Brilliant vintage matte-finish 10 x 13 Melbourne Spurr portrait of a young Ford, immersed in thought and with pipe in hand, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Tommy Turner, Sincerely, in appreciation, John Ford.” Lower left corner bears a Spurr blindstamp. Trimmed and in fine condition, with a spot of staining to upper right corner. Ford began his directorial career during the silent era, making as many as sixty films between 1917 and 1928. Although undated, this portrait doubtlessly depicts Ford during the beginnings of a career that spanned well over fifty years. A wonderfully reflective image enhanced furthermore by the scarcity of its subject in oversized photos. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
