Irish art director and production designer for the film industry (1893–1960) who is credited as the designer of the Oscar statuette in 1928; he was nominated 38 times for the Academy Award for Best Production Design and won the Oscar 11 times. Rare vintage sepia matte-finish 11 x 14 studio portrait of Gibbons by Ruth Harriet Louise, signed and inscribed to the photographer in fountain pen, “For the only photographer in the world who can take pictures as beautiful as my own precious Ruth Harriet—Cedric.” Lower right corner bears the photographer’s blindstamp, with her MGM credit stamp to the reverse. In very good condition, with creases, tears, and paper loss to blank borders, cracking to emulsion near inscription area, and scattered silvering. The first Gibbons-signed item we have ever offered.
