Letter to Thomas Smith, confirming receipt of papers from Smith's son and discussing the related legal matter, in part: “The papers have been perused—no such order of the late Chancellor Livingston for the delivery of the papers to you, as mentioned in your deposition, is to be found among the papers received from you—on the contrary, there is an order of the late Chan’r Livingston made 25 Ap’l 1796 for the delivery of these papers Eliz’th Smith & W’m Dennings…Be pleased to inform me when the order mentioned in your letter may be seen. Mr. Dennings whom I have just now seen, can give me no information on the subject.” In very good condition, with several small areas of repaired paper loss and moderate overall irregular staining.
