French painter, pastellist and draughtsman (1861–1917) whose famous models included Sarah Bernhardt, Romaine Brooks, Jean Moreas, Winnaretta Singer, and Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau. ALS in French, signed “A. de La Gandara,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, Quai Voltaire letterhead, no date. Letter to a female colleague, in part (translated): “I hope that we will be luckier this time. I am sending you a model that I have often used—as has Boldini—for the silhouette. As for the figure, imagine a frog…they furnish as many models as are wanted, but quality is more difficult.” An area of soiling to signed page, some smudging to the writing, expected horizontal mailing fold passing through a portion of the surname, and a partial separation to lower spine, otherwise fine condition.
