Description

Rare four-language ship’s passport for the whaling journey of the Union

Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 22 x 17, October 23, 1877. Four-language ship’s papers issued to “Wm. H. Reynard master or commander of the schooner called Union…lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for Atlantic Ocean and laden with Provisions, stores and utensils for a whaling voyage.” Signed in the fourth panel by Hayes and countersigned by Secretary of State William M. Evarts. The seal affixed at the bottom remains intact. In very good condition, with show-through from tape repairs to partial separations of intersecting folds, scattered creases, and expected document wear. Hayes was the last president to sign such whaling documents, and their limited use during his administration has made them quite scarce. A highly desirable document from the last vestiges of America’s prolific 19th-century whaling industry. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
