Description

O. O. Howard

Union general (1830–1909) who participated at Gettysburg and commanded the Army of Tennessee during Sherman’s March to the Sea. Hand-corrected biographical proof for inclusion in the Who’s Who published by George Routledge & Sons, initialed “O. O. H.,” one page, 5.75 x 9.25, no date. The preliminary entry is affixed to the center of the sheet and extensively edited in Howard’s hand, with revisions such as correcting the date of the Battle of Fair Oaks where he lost his right arm to “June 1st” and adding that he “Recd the thanks of Congress for taking the position of success at Gettysburg.” He also strikes out a passage stating his corps was ‘surprised in broad daylight’ by Stonewall Jackson, writing a footnote, “Never surprized [sic] in my life.” Intersecting folds, irregular toning, chipping to edges, and staple holes to the top, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
