Description

Robert Stroud

Two TLSs sent to his sister Mamie Stroud. The first, one page, lightly-lined, 8 x 10.25, October 24, 1942. The second, signed “Bob Stroud,” one page both sides, lightly-lined, 8 x 10, July 29, 1939, in part: “I had a little surprise last night. The warden came over and notified me that a little story I wrote for a contest conducted by the bureau of prisons, one of 36 submitted from this place…and including all federal prisons, had received honorable mention. There were eight cash prizes and the ten next best stories were given honorable mentions. I was thirteenth on the list of eighteen. Not so good; not good enough to get into the money; but fair, considering that fiction writing is not the kind I do my best at.” The December letter bears blue pencil notations in another hand. In overall fine condition, with intersecting folds to both, and tiny tears to left edge and a chip to trimmed top edge of the July letter. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
