Handwritten manuscript, unsigned, two pages, 8 x 9.75, no date but circa 1864. A portion of Sumner’s manuscript for an article on British seizures in neutral waters. In part: “Such are some of the seizures actually made by Great Britain in defiance of neutral rights during the war against the French Revolution and against us. There is another incident, belonging to the latter period, which though not a consummated seizure is in the nature of testimony, especially as it concerns the very port of Bahia where the Florida was seized. Commodore Bainbridge, of the Navy of the U. States, after his capture of the British frigate Java, left Capt. Lawrence [of] the Hornet, to cruise off the [port of] Bahia, instructing him…‘[to] be at your guard against the arrival of the Montague…& I advise you not to rely too much on the protection of the central port of Bahia against the British admiral’s influence to capture you even in port.’.” In very good condition, with a large hole to the center affecting several words of the manuscript, small edge separations to folds, and a few small stains. This piece was first published under the title ‘Case of the Florida’ in the Boston Daily Advertiser on November 29, 1864. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
