Description

“Small minded people may object to me as a MacArthur man but I am one and they should already know it”

ALS, signed “George Kenney,” two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, Headquarters Air University letterhead, May 8, 1951. Letter to Francis Drake. In part: “Just got back from Japan and Korea…While en route I heard that MacA had been fired so I rewrote about 40 pages of the book…The other thing you were worried about—the reaction in Washington to my future—I don’t know either but whatever it is, the die is cast. Small minded people may object to me as a MacArthur man but I am one and they should already know it. If the price of staying in the service is denying that I know or like the man, then I don’t want to play…The chief’s present plan is to retire me on Aug 6…If I didn’t believe that the Reds will attack by late summer of 1952 at the latest, I’d quit now.” Also included is a hardcover copy of Kenney’s The MacArthur I Know, signed and inscribed on the first free end page, “To Francis Drake, with best regards, George C. Kenney, Gen. USAF.” In fine condition, with some slight surface loss to top right corner of signed book page, some scattered light wear and sunning to spine of dust jacket, and some slight toning to top edge of letter.
