William L. James

Union officer from Pennsylvania and antebellum newspaper editor (1833–1903). LS signed “Wm. L. James,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, Chief Quartermaster’s Office letterhead, June 18, 1866. Letter to Virginia attorney W. W. Beckwith. In part: “The account of the Williamsburgh Turnpike Co. enclosed in your letter of the 15th inst., is herewith respectfully returned, with the information that to enable this Department to place it in proper shape for a settlement, a certificate from the Secretary of the Commonwealth, setting forth the fact that the Co. is a regularly incorporated turnpike company, by an act of the State Legislature…Also a transcript form the Co.’s Toll Books, giving the dates and number of Wagons and Teams passing over the Turnpike, specifying whether they were Two or Four Horse or Mule Teams and whether loaded or unloaded.” In fine condition.
