Rare partly-printed DS as president, signed “James A. Garfield,” one page, 17 x 14, June 1, 1881. President Garfield appoints Presley C. Lane as “Postmaster at Palmyra, in the county of Marion, State of Missouri.” Crisply signed at the conclusion by Garfield and countersigned by Postmaster General Thomas L. James. The gold seal and red ribbon affixed to the lower left remain crisp and fully intact. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and light bands of toning to the signature area from the seal and ribbons. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved portrait. Lane was active in politics, representing Marion County in the state legislature in addition to his role as postmaster. Presidential appointments by Garfield are extremely scarce, as he actively served just four months as president—having taken the office in March 1881, he was shot on July 2 and passed away in September. An exemplary Garfield document from his brief term as executive. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
