One of the longest serving Catholic cardinals and the final heir to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1725–1807). The papacy did not recognize him as the lawful ruler, instead referring to him as Cardinal Duke of York. LS in Italian, signed “Errico Cardinale,” one page, 8 x 10.5, December 10, 1801. Letter reads, in part (translated): “Messrs. Busoni, Goupy…have kindly agreed to pay off the draft of £10000, which was made to them by our Treasury, as per the agreement made with them by us, and debited on our current account, in line with the [document] which they hold in their hands.” Intersecting folds, several areas of ink erosion to text, not affecting overall legibility, and some scattered light toning, otherwise fine condition.
